State Parks: Possum Kingdom

This is Passport to Texas

There seems to be an assumption that Possum Kingdom State Park and Lake aren’t fully functional because of this year’s spring wildfire and past bouts with golden algae. State Park Guide Bryan Frazier says nothing could be further from the truth.

At Possum Kingdom SP, they did have a close call with a wildfire, and it did actually impact the park.

But once you get down into the park, past the headquarters it’s hard to tell there was a fire. Most all of the developed area, all of the structures, the boat ramp, in and around the lake, the campsites, the cabins—virtually unaffected.

And so, what we have is people making some assumptions that the wildfire or in years past—the golden algae—or even the drought that we’ve had that the lake is low. That’s not the case at all either. Possum Kingdom looks fantastic. The water is clear blue. It’s down a little, but not much, compared to what the rest of the lakes in Texas are.

And the recreation here is unmatched. From the fishing, to the scenery, to the cabins and the campsites that are right along the lake shore—those are going un-rented, even on weekends now. And we’re trying to get the word out: Possum Kingdom is alive and well and doing great!

Thanks, Bryan!

New and Improved: Tyler State Park

Friday, August 26th, 2011

This is Passport to Texas

Tyler State Park in the east Texas Pineywoods is ready for its close-up. After a great deal of planning and hard work, the park more of what folks expect in a great outdoor destination. Bryan Frazier explains.

It was part of the Capital Campaign that we did at Tyler State Park.

And we made some four million dollars in renovations. And that’s everything from converting screen shelters into little mini-cabins with air conditioning, to complete renovation to the group dining hall with air conditioning with new appliances, to renovating campground loops with new blacktop roads and new water and electric hookups and new tent pads.

So, the experience that people are going to find there is even better.

Tyler is a great park. It’s known for its biking trails. It’s known for its great 60-acre fishing and swimming lake there. It’s the beautiful Pineywoods of East Texas…it’s actually not that far from the DFW area. But, it’s even better with these upgrades and improvements. It just makes people’s experience on the other side of the park gate more of what they love. And we’re proud to offer that at Tyler SP.

Reserve your campsite online when you log onto the Texas parks and Wildlife website.

South Padres Island: Sea Turtle Restoration

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

This is Passport to Texas

Have you ever watched National Geographic specials about sea turtle restoration, including the release of baby sea turtles and wished you could see it for yourself. Well, you can…on South Padre Island. Bryan Frazier explains.

There’s a partnership effort going on for sea turtles. And you have Sea Turtle, Inc., non-profit rescue service. You have Texas Parks and Wildlife involved sea turtle restoration, you have the national park service and lots of other conservation groups.

And what you’ve gotten down in South Padre Island is a real tourist push. People come there from all over the United States and internationally to witness these turtles being released, and to be a part of it.

It’s become this volunteer effort. There will be dozens of people that show up.

Summer is the end of the hatchings being returned. They’ve all come out of the nest. The effort is year-round in terms of rescue and managing that habitat. And it’s a real success story. They’re slowly and gradually getting those populations back to viable numbers. And all stories like that are neat and interesting, but to see it firsthand…they’re just beautiful animals, and South Padre has established itself as a real flagship area for that.

Thanks, Bryan!

Daingerfield State Park Cleans up Nice

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

This is Passport to Texas

Daingerfield State Park is open for business after being closed for a year. Our state park guide, Bryan Frazier explains.

It was closed for a year. It’s been totally renovated. I mean, renovations on CCC structures down at the boat house; the state park store; the cabins were recently renovated; the campsites.

We went from 10 full hookups with water, electric and sewer to 40!

The lake is in great shape. It’s a beautiful park in the Pineywoods in Northeast Texas, and now it’s open for reservations including the group lodge that sleeps up to 14 or 15. It’s been completely renovated with new fixtures and new appliances, and I think people are going to enjoy what they find there.

And what you mentioned to me before I turned on my recorder is that the lake has not been fished in a year.

It has not. And I was up there and fished it, and the fishing is quite good for things like largemouth bass and even chain pickerel, which if you live in NE Texas, it’s a pretty common fish, but if you if you live in other parts of the state—it’s not. It’s a Texas Pike.

So, get on up to Daingerfield SP. Make those reservations as soon as you can, as soon as you know where you’re going to be, because people are finding out that that place is a hot ticket right now.

Thanks, Bryan

Drawn Hunts at State Parks

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

In camp after the hunt

This is Passport to Texas

Hunting is not what most people think about when they pack up the car and head to a state park. However, many Texas State Parks offer diverse hunting opportunities, as our state park guide, Bryan Frazier explains.

There are numerous state parks that offer drawn hunts, and they may draw 25 hunters and only get 200 applicants, so your chances of success are good.

And we’re talking about everything from antlerless deer to javelina to unlimited exotics and feral hogs to either sex deer…and so people need to find that booklet or go online and find that information about getting in on the draws on public lands in state park.

They can specify by park which one they’re interested in. So, I really encourage people to look at the hunting opportunities in state park. Because, it is also a way that we can manage the resource; It is a valuable way for us to make sure that our populations of wildlife are in balance and in check that work well with campers and birdwatchers and everything else that we like. it is a balance, and so this is one way to help manage that.

Find information about drawn hunts when you log onto the Texas Parks and Wildlife website.
