Outreach Grants: When funding is tight, non-profit organizations can turn to Texas Parks and Wildlife to get people into the outdoors. We'll tell you how, coming up on Passport To Texas. Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife. Non-profit groups wanting to introduce anyone to the outdoors often find it difficult to find the funding to purchase the needed recreational equipment. But with Texas Parks and Wildlife's Community Outdoor Outreach Grants, these organizations are getting the help they need. "We have a generation of kids who are used to being inside, playing their Nintendo games, or watching TV. These grants are available to tax-exempt organizations who want to introduce kids to the outdoors..." Darlene Lewis heads up the program. Any non-profit organization is eligible to be awarded up to 30-thousand dollars to be used toward outdoor education and recreation, historical and cultural heritage or recreation safety. "We've gone out with these kids on the program and these kids are city kids, as I like to call them and they'll get there and they're like "why are we here, what do we do," and then the next day you can't get them back on the bus, because it's such a new experience for them." The next deadline for grant applications is October first. To learn more about outreach grants, come to passporttotexas.org. Coming up on tomorrow's show... "The grant has really allowed us some decent equipment. Sleeping bags, packs, tents that they can use." For Texas Parks and Wildlife, I'm Cecilia Nasti.
