Outreach Grants - 2: Texas non-profits are getting more folks in the outdoors, with the help of available grants. That's coming up on Passport To Texas. Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife. Participants in the American Youthworks Program of Austin build affordable housing, plant trees and take part in numerous conservation projects, including those at state parks. "Most of what we do is centered around service to the community. All of our members are working toward a college scholarship when they complete the program, so it's a way for them to serve and work to further their own educational; goals." But many of the young men and women in the program didn't have the proper equipment when it came to overnight assignments and teambuilding field trips. "We'd go on camping trips and they would bring their stuff in a plastic garbage bag or a pillow case..." So counselors David Clauss and Carlos Rodriguez applied for and received a 30-thousand dollar Community Outdoor Outreach Grant, from Texas Parks and Wildlife. "DC: The grant has really allowed us some decent equipment. Some sleeping bags and packs, tents that they can use, to make it a more positive experience..." CR: "These are canoes, we were able to get four of them with our grant, and it's been great." Any statewide, non-profit group is eligible to be awarded up to 30-thousand dollars to be used toward outdoor recreation and education. The next deadline for applications is October first.
