Galveston Island Fun Run: On your mark...get set... run...to Galveston Island State Park. That's coming up on Passport To Texas. Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife. Lewis Cantrell has been running in Galveston Island State Park for about six years. "It's just a nice, quiet sanctuary, it's very scenic, with the birds, wildlife and things of that nature." When one day it dawned on him that the location would be the perfect place for an organized race to benefit the "Friends of Galveston State Park" group. So on Saturday, August 13th, the park will host it's first 5K Nature Run/Walk & Kids 1K. "We have several categories. We have a first and second overall, masters first and second and five year age groups...Going up to 80-years old...and we'll have awards for all of the runners in the kids 1K." Commemorative race t-shirts will be available to the first 300 participants. The USA Track & Field sanctioned & certified course will be held on flat asphalt and will take place on the "bay side" of the park. And afterward, participants and spectators will enjoy a post-race party, Galveston-style... "Nice refreshments, a shrimp boil, and also a live band...so we're expecting a good turnout for it."
