Hummingbird Sighting: There's a "buzz" around Lubbock with the sighting of a rare hummingbird... we'll tell you more coming up on Passport To Texas. Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife. It was one of those rare opportunities, that July day in Lubbock, when birders spotted something not normally found in the Southern Plains - a white-eared hummingbird. The white-eared is a Mexican mountain species that has been recorded in West Texas, which is quite a surprise since Lubbock is not really what you would consider a mountain area (laughs)." Mark Klym heads up the Hummingbird Round-up for Texas Parks and Wildlife. The volunteer group monitors hummingbird sightings in the state, including those species, like the white-eared that occasional show up outside the normal flight path. When you get a bird that you've never seen in your life, it's exciting, but when you get one that has not been seen in your area before, it's extremely exciting. It causes a little bit of a stir among the birders." It's believed this particular bird abandoned its nesting area and simply happened to find a locale with plentiful accommodations and made itself at home. To see a picture of this rare bird and to learn more about the Hummingbird Round-up, come to our website, passporttotexas.org. Coming up on tomorrow's show, a new book will make it easier to spot a white-eared, or any other hummingbird. "There are lots of color photographs of hummingbirds, lots of color drawings of hummingbirds. All 18 species that have been found in Texas. There's information on hummingbird gardens, and hummingbird events across the state. it's just a great resource for people." For Texas Parks and Wildlife, I'm Cecilia Nasti.
