September 5 -- Dick Dowling Days: On September 10 and 11 watch a re-enactment of the 1863 battle that saved the port of Houston and the state of Texas from Union invasion at Sabine Pass Battleground SP & SH. Main battle will be held late Saturday afternoon; skirmish Sunday, with drills and demonstrations throughout the day. September 12 -- Expo Preview: Begun in 1992 as a tribute to hunting, fishing and the Great Outdoors, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Expo will celebrate its fourteenth anniversary this year! Saturday and Sunday, October 1 & 2, Texas Parks and Wildlife headquarters in Austin will once again be transformed into the site of the largest event of its kind in the nation. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/expo/ September 13-14 -- Rare Hummingbird Sighting/New Book September 15-16 -- USS Texas Reunion/Hard Hat Tour: On October 1 and 2 USS TEXAS will be hosting the reunion of the Veterans Association. The Battleship will also be featuring a military history timeline. Re-enactors and historical interpreters will depict American soldiers from the American Revolution to the present. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. On October 15, you can take a guided tour of the Battleship USS TEXAS, entering areas rarely seen by the public! There will be four three-and-one-half hour tours throughout the day. September 19 -- TPWD Website Redesign: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/ September 20-21 -- Bat Survey: A team of scientists from Boston University, University of Tennessee, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department have returned to Uvalde for the second year of a five-year research project on bats. The research seeks to better estimate numbers of Mexican free-tailed bats in Texas and to determine the dollar contribution of bats to protect corn, cotton and other crops against insect infestation. Early indications are that bats are worth millions of dollars in avoided pesticide use, which also benefits the natural environment. September 23 -- 150th Anniversary of Ft. Lancaster: On October 15th, Ft. Lancaster will celebrate its 150th Anniversary. See living history re-enactors portraying frontier life.
