BLACK GAP YOUTH QUAIL: A weekend of free quail hunting with the kids in West Texas ... details are ahead on Passport to Texas Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Adjacent to Big Bend National Park, Black Gap Wildlife management area is one hundred nineteen thousand acres of West Texas wilderness. "We're right on the edge of the Chihuahuan desert, right before you get into the Edwards Plateau. So the vegetation and wildlife is quite diverse." "Tom Vanzant is lead biologist at the site. Quail are among the species found at Black Gap. On October 15 and 16, the site hosts an early season youth quail hunt." "It gives the youth an opportunity to come out and hunt before anyone else during the quail season. We allow the guardians - he parents - to also hunt as long as they have one youth in the group. Mostly it's just to get the kids involved." The event is free, and Vanzant says he's optimistic about hunter success. "For the quail hunting, I think it's going to be good. Fair to good. We've had some late showers this summer, and that's helped with our hatches." The Black Gap Wildlife Management area is rugged country ... and as such, Vanzant reminds everyone who visits to watch their step. "You have to look out for cactus out here. Because like they say, everything out here either sticks you, bites you, or gives you a rash."
