Passport to Texas ... from Texas Parks and Wildlife

Not all winter Texans arrive in motor homes headed for 
the Rio Grand Valley. Rainbow trout get here during the 
chilly months inside tank trucks, eventually ending up in 
ponds and lakes throughout the state.

We値l start usually the first week in December every year, and 
we値l run through about the middle of March. :05

Todd Engeling coordinates the rainbow trout program for 
Texas Parks and Wildlife. This year Inland Fisheries will 
stock approximately 270-thousand rainbow trout in state 
waters.

We do it to support a unique winter fishery. For the most part, 
the trout are going to small urban impoundments - small 
community fishing lakes as we call them -- usually in proximity 
to towns and municipalities so people have access to them. :12

These eight to ten inch trout are easy to catch, which 
makes them an ideal species for children and beginners.

Rainbow trout are a very good species for an urban type setting; 
these are farm raised fish. They are caught very easily. So, 
especially for first timers, you are almost guaranteed success.

Trout anglers over 17 years of age must have a fishing 
license and a Freshwater Fishing Stamp. Licenses and 
stamps are not required when fishing in State Parks ... and 
the daily bag limit is five fish.
