PARRIE HAYNES RIDING TRAILS: Saddle up and ride though some of the most diverse landscape in the state ... we'll tell you where ... just ahead on Passport to Texas. ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Just south of Killeen, at the Parrie Haynes Youth Ranch, you and your horse can meander through seven different ecological areas. " ... including Hill Country-type caliche rock, grasslands, cedar-covered hills, oak forests, it's absolutely wonderful." Karl Cloninger is the manager of the Ranch, operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. It has an extensive system of premier horse-riding trails, and overnight accommodations for those who need them. "We have 20 sets of 2 horse pens and 22 to 26, 30-amp RV plugs with power and 20 sites with water. Our casual day riding fees are 10-dollars per rig, per day. A rig is a truck and a trailer. And if you come and stay overnight with us, and hook up to the power units, its 12-dollars a day. It's a very good deal." The 44-hundred acre ranch was a gift to the youth of Texas from the late Parrie Haynes. Up to 50 riders at time can use the ranch trails, and riders must carry proof of a negative Coggins Disease certificate in order to bring their horses onto the ranch.
