OFF HIGHWAY VEHICLES, 3: You need to have a decal if you want to off road in Texas ... details ahead on Passport to Texas ... ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas ... from Texas Parks and Wildlife There's a shortage of convenient acreage for safe, legal off road riding in Texas. That's about to change. The Texas Off Highway Vehicle Program will create more venues; a new decal will help fund it. The decal is similar to the boat registration decal that we sell at Parks and Wildlife. The decal says that you are legal to ride on public land with a trail vehicle. :11 Steve Thompson coordinates the program through Texas Parks and Wildlife. He says only non street legal vehicles - both four wheeled and two wheeled -- are required to display the decal. Street legal vehicles are not. The decal for the first year will be eight dollars. It will be available through Texas Parks and Wildlife's Headquarters, and will be good from January through August 31st of 2006. :10 Federal grant money from the Recreational Trails Program, will also go to fund the trails. These family oriented venues promote safety first. We'll have rules, we'll have marked trails, you'll be required to have personal protective gear for riding ATVs and motorcycles. You'll have to have roll bars, seat belts and fire extinguishers in the full size vehicles. :13 It's important to note that non street legal vehicles with decals may only ride on public land where OHV activity is legal, or in designated OHV areas. And you'll have to have your decal displayed prominently. That's our show for today ... thank you for joining us ... For Texas Parks and Wildlife ... I'm Cecilia Nasti.
