TEXAS INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION: View the original Texas Declaration of Independence ... details ahead on Passport to Texas ... ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas ... from Texas Parks and Wildlife The biggest celebration of Texas Independence since the declaration was signed March 2, 1836, happens March 4 & 5 at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view the original document. It's the original handwritten copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence, which has only been back to its site of origin - Washington-on-the-Brazos - once. :09 Beth Taylor, Executive Director of the Washington-on-the Brazos Association, says other key historic documents will be available for viewing, including Grey's diary and Travis' letter. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Typically those documents are in the Texas State Archives, which is great as far as preservation. But it does not allow the people of Texas to see these documents which made Texas what it is today. :14 This is a free, family-friendly celebration. All tour fees have been waived for the weekend. Of course there'll be historical re-enactors, period craft demonstrations, toe-tapping Texas music, and one of the highlights for the children is the Texas Army who will, throughout the weekend, give some black gun powder salutes. :16 Expect food and entertainment, including KR Wood and the Fathers of Texas - but that's not all. In addition, on Sunday, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Gary P. Nunn, and Rusty Weir will be performing. :06 Visit the calendar section of the TPWD web site for complete details about this event.
