Managing Editor Charles Lohrmann. Every July we produce a special water issue. And in past years we've focused on rivers, springs and bays. This year we're focusing our water issue on wetlands. Many people think wetlands are just swamps - stinky, smelly, mosquito infested places that should be avoided at all costs, or maybe even filled in. But, the reality is, wetlands are essential for wildlife and for our water supplies. They provide essential habitat. They filter and clean our water. They also act as a sponge and provide flood control in the eastern part of the state. In fact, they even can protect against a hurricane storm surge. One of the most interesting and really amazing articles we have is about the Bahia Grande restoration project in extreme South Texas where very diverse communities are coming together to preserve a 10-thousand acre wetland and really realize a community vision that's going to bring a complicated wetland ecosystem back to life. :60 That's our show.
