KID'S SURVIVAL TRAINING: Teaching children wilderness survival ... on Passport to Texas. ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife It's never too early to teach children what to do if they ever become separated from the family while on a nature outing. We want the kids to know what they need to do to keep themselves safe if they're out there by themselves. :07 David Owens is park interpreter and assistant superintendent at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. On July 29 the park offers wilderness survival training for children aged five to fourteen. This program is basically to teach kids what to do in case they get lost out in the woods. And of course we give all kinds of tips about how to keep from getting lost and staying with your group, and things like that. :12 Children must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or youth group leader. We play a few games; we go on an actual hike; we give them some equipment that we'd like them to bring as they hike so they'll know how to use it. When we get out there, we tell them the basics of what you need to do by using a "stop sign" acronym, s-t-o-p, and that reminds them of what they need to do step-by-step out there in the woods if they ever get lost. :24 The training is free, but reservations are required. Contact the park for more information. Tomorrow - teaching kids how to STOP when lost in the wilderness. That's our show for today ... for Texas Parks and Wildlife ... I'm Cecilia Nasti.
