WILDERNESS SURVIVAL: Do you know what to have with you when you are in a wilderness area ... find out on Passport to Texas. ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife If you like visiting wilderness locations, then you need to be prepared in case you get turned around or separated from your group. You need the right stuff. David Owens is a state park interpreter who teaches wilderness survival training to children. Young or old, there are items every adventurer needs to carry with them when trekking through the wilds. We like them to have water. That's one of the main things that makes kids sick, you get dehydrated. The second thing we like them to take, and we call it the most important piece of equipment, a plastic garbage sack. Believe it or not, you can do a lot of things with a plastic garbage sack. But the most important is to use it as a raincoat or a coat in general. We teach them how to do that, how to put it on, how to keep themselves warm and dry. Then we teach them the right clothes to wear, bright colored clothes, and a hat. And take a jacket if you have room to pack it away. It might be hot that day, but it might be cool that night. We teach them to bring a mirror, and we show them how to use a mirror, how they can signal aircraft or people far off with their mirror. And we tell them to bring a whistle, and teach them when to use that whistle. Those are the main things we teach them that they can take. :52 Learn more about the outdoors when you log onto the Texas Parks and Wildlife Website.
