Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife

It's important to educate children about our rapidly
changing planet. With that in mind, Project WILD teaches,
K through 12 teachers how to integrate ecological
awareness and conservation practices into their curricula.

"The program provides ways to get the students actually into the
environment and to get them using scientific methods out in the
environment."

Auburn Carpenter, Education Projects Manager at the
Texas State Aquarium, and Project WILD volunteer.

"They're actually getting their hands dirty and they are using the
tools to collect things and microscopes, and then there are also
opportunities for them to do service projects in their community
and to actually do something to make a difference in their
environment."

And Project WILD makes a difference when included in
any classroom discipline.

"A lot of it isn't just science; they've incorporated the other
disciplines into the lessons, so for instance if you wanted to add
math to your science or language arts or social studies ... you
don't necessarily have to be a science teacher to participate in
Project WILD."

Details about Project WILD are on the Texas Parks &
Wildlife website. Tomorrow: the newest addition to the
Project WILD program -- Flying WILD.
