FLYING WILD: Teachers are spreading their wings ... details on Passport To Texas. ___________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Flying WILD is the newest addition to the Project WILD educational program. Middle school teachers now have the chance to incorporate the value of birds into their lesson plans. Auburn Carpenter is Education Projects Manager at the Texas State Aquarium and Project WILD volunteer. "No matter where you live in the world, birds are a presence. It is one of those species that you can find everywhere, even if you are in an urban area or a rural area, then birds are still around you." Free workshops and curriculum guides are offered to educators to help promote nature awareness to their students. "The students and the teachers as well tend to retain a lot of their information because it's presented in a fun way, and they're active, and they get to go outside and use neat tools to gather their information and their data." Schools are encouraged to host community bird festivals to display the knowledge and appreciation students have achieved. "I encourage the teachers to not be afraid to attempt having a festival because it really benefits the students and they get to use a lot of their science skills but they are also gaining confidence in presenting information to other people."
