HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGRY: Texas hunters take aim against hunger. We'll tell you more coming up Passport to Texas. ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Texas hunters are making hunger their target during the 2006-2007 hunting season. The "Hunters for the Hungry" program encourages sportsmen and women to donate meat from harvested game animals to help food assistance organizations across the state. "If they're not going to utilize the meat, if they're going to harvest it for conservation purposes, there is still a way they utilize the meat that they've taken. Often times hunters will harvest more than they actually need and they don't want to waste it, so if they don't give it away to friends they take it and give it to Hunters for the Hungry." That's Terry Erwin, Hunter Education Coordinator for Texas Parks and Wildlife. Since 1991, Hunters for the Hungry has distributed almost half a million pounds of venison and other game to food service providers throughout the state. And donating is easy. " Once you tag your animal legally and take it into a processing plant, you're' expected to pay for that processing and they put it all together and they take it to the food pantry." The Hunters for the Hungry will accept venison donations, as well as wild hog and fowl. Your donation will help feed deserving families.
