LONGHORN CATTLE DRIVE: Saddle up ... it's time to round up the herd. We'll explain on Passport to Texas ... ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Remember the movie City Slickers? Two weeks, the three of us - driving cattle. What? Like in a truck? No, it's a real old-fashioned cattle drive! A real, old-fashioned longhorn cattle drive is just what you get in spring and fall at Big Bend Ranch State Park in Presidio. Tony Gallego is the site superintendent. People come out and round up the cattle and drive them to headquarters. While they're at the headquarters, we process the calves, we brand them, vaccinate them. Anything that needs to be done with them, the people do ... Participants drive 150 head of longhorn cattle eight miles; eat meals from a chuck wagon, and sleep under the stars. Don't worry if you've never done it before. We're watching over you all the time to make sure you do everything right. We never had anybody get hurt. Maybe a little saddle sore, but that's it. Be sure to bring gloves, a wide brimmed hat, sturdy closed toed shoes, sunscreen, chaps, or thick pants. Gallego recommends getting in good physical condition for the drive, too. Before coming out to the cattle drive, we recommend doing yoga. Yoga stretches your muscles. Somehow, I just can't imagine John Wayne doing the downward dog. The fall Longhorn cattle drive is sold out, but you can get on the waiting list for the spring event; find details on the TPWD website. That's our show for today ... For Texas Parks and Wildlife ... I'm Cecilia Nasti.
