TPWD TV - IN THEIR OWN WORDS: Game wardens share what it was like to work recovery for Katrina and Rita ... on Passport to Texas ... ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife "In Their Own Words" is a segment on the Texas Parks and Wildlife television series, set to air the week of October fifteenth. In Texas game wardens, who answered the call to help in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, tell their stories. Be warned: The descriptions are graphic. "You can't see something of this magnitude, with people suffering death and destruction and not take something away from it with you that you're going to carry the rest of your life (ambience, dogs barking, men calling 'hello' ... motor revving) "That was the blackest water that I'd ever seen in my life. It was a witch's brew of chemicals and substances that was in this water. And then you add in the dead people and dead animals, and of course, the decomposition. "This was just horrible, horrible waters. And in fact, the spray from the airboats would hit you in the face and it would sting your face, it wouldn't sting your arms, but it would sting your face from whatever was in the water. "You can watch the video, and you can see the pictures, but you're not seeing it in 3D. You're not seeing the movement, and one thing you're definitely not getting, you're not getting the smell. The smell is something that's still not out of my nose yet. It's a terrible, terrible, terrible smell. I couldn't describe it, how bad the smell is." It smelled like death. That's what we're not going to forget - what it smells like down in there." The Texas Parks and Wildlife Television series airs on PBS stations ... check your local listings.
