FEATHERED FORCES, 2: It's part boot camp and part science camp ... we'll tell you more on Passport to Texas ... ____________________________________________________________ PTT from TPWD and the SFWR Program Not all summer camps are created equal. (SFX -- marching) Feathered Forces, for example, is part boot camp and part science camp. "Well, we do have a slight military theme; we do some marching in conservation cadences." Helen Holdsworth, is executive director of the Texas Brigades, a wildlife-focused leadership development program for high school youth. "Part of it is teaching them discipline and teaching them to work as a team. And the cadences that they're calling are related to conservation. They talk about habitat management, and they talk about Aldo Leopold, and so it reinforces the learning that they're doing." The camp isn't all marching and shouting. Camp participant Shelby Thomas, says she learned about turkey and quail this summer, and how habitat loss impacts their survival. "The habitat is rapidly going down. And people aren't aware of the conservation practices that we have to do to manage that habitat. This camp teaches, you know, youth what we need to do to be able to maintain and develop a healthy, good, natural habitat for these animals."
