HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGRY, 1: How hunting helps feed the hungry ... Details ahead on Passport to Texas ____________________________________________________________ PTT from TPWD and the SFWR Program Deer hunters may harvest up to five animals per season, but few do because they lack freezer space for the meat. Don't let that stop you -- donate surplus venison to Hunter's for the Hungry. Hunters for the hungry is a statewide venison donation program. :04 Pam Robers (row-berz) is program manager for the hunger relief programs run by the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies. She says the animals must be field dressed. Hunters who want to take an extra deer can take their deer to one of ninety meat processors who are scattered throughout the state. And, the meat processor will usually ask for a minimal amount to cover processing fees - somewhere from twenty to thirty dollars. And the hunter will get a receipt that they can use for their tax purposes. :20 The meat processor turns the donated venison into ground meat. And puts it into two pound chub packs that we give the meat processor. And then there are emergency food providers throughout the state who have told us that they want the meat. And they either give it to families who are in need, or use it in soup kitchens ... stews ... it goes to a diversity of places that helps feed low-income people. :20 Find a processor near you by visiting tacaa.org.
