Quail season started on October 28 and continues 
through February 25th.

Hunting quail is a unique type of hunt. :03

Vickie Fite, Parks and Wildlife public hunting coordinator, 
offers advice to people new to quail hunting on public 
lands. 

If you've never hunted quail before, I would suggest that you 
contact the area that you're thinking about going to. If you're 
going a little later in the season, you can always contact the area 
manager to see how the hunts have gone so far. :10

For the past two years, South Texas -- known for its 
abundant quail -- has suffered from drought. And that 
could impact hunting success. 

There are some birds; they're just harder to come by. The 
wounding rate may b e a little higher, especially if you're a novice 
hunter. :06

That's why Fite says first time quail hunters should bring 
"reinforcements" into the field with them.

So, you know, if you have an opportunity to hunt with somebody 
that has a dog, I recommend that you go with someone that is a 
trained hunter that has access to a hunting dog. :08

hunting opportunities on public lands, then call ahead to 
see how well other hunters have fared.
