BIG SHELL, 2: Volunteer to help clean up a unique Texas beach ... we'll have details up next on Passport to Texas. Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Even in years when hurricanes don't make a mess of the Texas coast, trash from far-flung places inundates Big Shell Beach due to the confluence of two strong currents pushing garbage onto the shore. You can walk along and pick up six or seven items, and you'll have four or five languages among the items. :07 Captain Billy Sandifer organizes the yearly Big Shell Beach cleanup, and the next one is Saturday March 14. Big Shell, considered one of Texas' most beautiful stretches of barrier island, is part of the Padres Island National Seashore. This year the personnel on the national seashore are all going to be down there with lots of trucks and lots of willing hands. This is kind of an upgrade -- more of a cooperative effort than we've ever had before. But the problem is larger than it's ever been before. :18 More hands are needed because debris from Galveston and other towns devastated by Hurricane Ike has overwhelmed the shoreline. We need every human being in Texas. Look, if they'll go to Terlingua to go to a Chili cook-off, undoubtedly they can come down here in paradise and help pick up trash. :12 Volunteers will meet March 14 at the Malaquite Visitor Center no later than 7:30 AM. If you have a four-wheeler, bring it -- you'll need it. Find complete details at passporttotexas.org. For Texas Parks and Wildlife ... I'm Cecilia Nasti.
