Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Now that black bears are making a slow comeback in Texas, it may be helpful to know a little something about them. Bears are shy and secretive by nature. Their instincts are to run and hide and climb, and they always have been because they evolved in forests. And that's how they've survived -- by running, hiding and climbing -- when they sense any kind of danger. :13 Nathan Garner, regional wildlife director for region three in east Texas, says if you hike, camp or hunt in remote areas, and you encounter a black bear, you can take comfort in knowing they are as scared of you as you are of them. Moreover, in case you were wondering, they are not interested in having you as an afternoon snack. Well, the one thing about black bears that people need to understand is they're not a true carnivore. Ninety percent of everything they eat is a vegetable matter of some kind, whether it's nuts, fruits, berries, plant leaves, stems of plants. The meat portion of their diet is a lot of insects. They do eat bees and wasps; and they eat ants and termites. But they're not a true carnivore in the sense that everything they eat has to be meat. And so, because of that, livestock owners should not be that concerned, and other folks should not be concerned that they're being hunted, because bears are very versatile in their diet. :33 The more you know ...
