TURKEY AT HQ: You'll want to hear about Tom [single turkey, yea, I could feel sorry for a guy :03] ... on Passport to Texas. Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife Well, I work at Headquarters for Texas Parks and Wildlife, and we have a wild turkey. Some of my friends call him Tom. I just call him Mr. Turkey. :07 This Rio Grande Turkey lives in the wilds of our Headquarters backyard, better known as McKinney Falls SP. Over the years, he's developed a great following among Parks and Wildlife employees. I've always thought he was a favorite of a lot of people who work at Parks and Wildlife. Definitely, he's unusual to see him so close and calm around people. I like him fine as long as he stays outside and doesn't try to come inside. I think it'd be funny if he actually came in one day. :13 Although beloved by all, the turkey's recent appearances in the parking lot have caused concern. For employees of a Wildlife agency, he's another example the cost to wildlife from rapid urbanization. I believe he used to have a mate, or a friend, and nobody has seen that friend in a long, long time. And Tom disappeared for awhile, too, but now he's back. Well you'd see him out there displaying with multiple turkeys and then they'd see their reflection in the glass in the back and they'd strut their stuff like a good turkey should. But in terms of him seeing him out in front, that's been frequently now, and to me, he's just sort of hanging out like he's missing his friends. Single turkey, yea, I could feel sorry for a guy. It's hard for a single turkey to make it in this world, I'm sure. I'm kind of touched he's hanging around. But we really want him with other turkeys in the park, in the wild. Where turkeys really belong. :38 That's our show ... with research and writing help from Sarah Loden... For Texas Parks and Wildlife ... I'm Cecilia Nasti.
