PRAIRIE QUAIL, 2: Banding together to restore native prairie and native species ... details ahead on Passport to Texas. PTT from TPWD and the SFWR Program We learned that to have more wildlife that we had to have better habitat. That is the chief factor controlling the amount of game you have, wildlife of all sorts, on the ranch. :10 When James Willis bought 225 acres in Colorado County, the land had been overgrazed and wildlife was virtually nonexistent. He began revegetating his property with native grasses, forbs and woody cover. After we got started and improved the habitat, the wildlife responded so well, that we decided to expand this and get our neighbors involved. :10 Willis started the Wildlife Habitat Federation with his neighbors: a coalition of adjoining landowners who manage their land for wildlife -- especially quail. [When] You have more quail you're going to have other types of species. This had already been proven by Texas A&M. Researchers came out -- and in those areas where we restored with native grasses and forbs they identified 31 species of upland birds. So, what we've done for quail has definitely had an impact on the other species. :22 Tomorrow learn about a unique partnership among birders, hunters, landowners and scientists to save our native grassland prairies.
