Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine’s Birding issue

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

This is Passport to Texas

Be on the lookout for the May issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine. It’s the much anticipated annual birding issue. Editor Louie Bond.

I noticed just today out on my morning walk how many birds were singing. It just fills you with such delight. In may, not only do we have the spring birding calendar, which tells everybody where you can go to see birds, where there are festivals, where there are classes.

We also like to feature a few special articles about birds. And I think the most promising one this month is an article about water birds, and in particular, water bird babies. Water birds have a very perilous nursery for their babies. They’re only located on these tiny islands off the coast of Texas. And they’re called rookeries.

And they call these colonial water birds, because they’re instinct is to gather together in these great colonies of all these different water birds and have their babies all together. So, it’s this gigantic, squawking, screaming, and unfortunately, stinky nursery where all these babies are born. Without these protected nurseries, our water birds are quite threatened. So, we have an excellent article this month. So, we encourage you to go outside to look up….see what’s up there.

Thanks, Louie

TPW Magazine April Preview

This is Passport to Texas

The April issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine, on newsstands now, will inspire families to get outside, and to maybe even do volunteer work. Editor, Louie Bond.

So, our idea this month is to get families out fishing together. So, we’re going to take you on six excellent family fishing vacations in Texas, and hope that you’re inspired to take your kids out, spend a weekend or a week out there, just with you and the water and a pole and lots of beautiful silence.

Then, another feature that I think is really special this month is the restoration of Galveston island State Park, which, of course was devastated by Hurricane Ike. There were a lot of questions at the time about the fate of Galveston Island State park, because it was so badly damaged, and there’s a great group of volunteers that were already in place, called the Friends of Galveston Island State Park. But, decided—here’s our call to action—and in they came, and they cleaned up trash, and they got stuff hauled away.

And most importantly, they found partners from everywhere. And, all of these different entities came together and did their part; there’s a lot to redone there, but it looks better than ever. So, people can actually come out this year and enjoy the park—and it’s a great success story.

Thanks, Louie!

TPW Magazine February Preview

Friday, January 15th, 2010

This is Passport to Texas

If you find yourself in a nostalgic or contemplative mood, you’ll get particular enjoyment from February’s issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine. Editor, Louie Bond.

I think in February we have some real treats for you. And two in particular really stand out. The first is a really lyrical piece by Russell Graves who grew up along the Bois’dArc Creek, and he and his brother spent many happy years there hunting and fishing and exploring and doing all those great things little boys do. And now the creek is being flooded to provide a reservoir, and he and his brother have taken one last trip down the creek and chronicled it with words, photographs, and even film; they’re going to make a little documentary on it. So, we’re bringing you the words and the photos, and on our website, some of the documentary work as well.

While you’re curled up in your armchair, if you’d like a little more to read, there’s a special Legend, Lore & Legacy on John Winter, who was a real Renaissance Man around the turn of the Twentieth Century. And avid outdoorsman who also happened to be a spectacular photographer. We came across these wonderful photographs and we knew there was a story behind the photographs. And, our own John Jefferson who’s quite a Renaissance Man, himself, really was fascinated by John Winter. And so it’s interesting the take of a Renaissance Man from one century chronicling the Renaissance man from a previous century.

Thanks Louie.

TPW Magazine–A Picture Perfect Issue

Friday, December 18th, 2009

This is Passport to Texas

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the January issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine will speak volumes. Editor, Louie Bond, says 2010’s first issue will be a festival of photos.

And I don’t mean just a couple of extra photos. Instead of our regular features, and some of our regular departments, we’re having photo essays by our best photographers. We are so blessed with these great talents, so we’ve decided to showcase portfolios from our photographers. It’s just going to be, I think, a thing of great beauty, and we’re really excited about it. We do hope this will become a regular occurrence every January.

So this year, we’re featuring Wyman Meinzer, who will be having a collection of shy photographs. Rolf Nussbaumer, who’s really well-known for his animal photographs in the magazine. We’re having a little twist with him—he’ll be featuring flowers this time. Jesse Conselmo, who you might remember from our State of the Gulf issue in 2008 will be featuring all kinds of fantastic under the sea. Laurence Parent will be playing around with light in nightscapes, and Clive Varlack will be putting bugs under the microscope for us.

In addition, we couldn’t leave out our good guys. So, Earl Nottingham, our longtime photographer, will have some photos in there, as will Brandon Jakobeit, our photo editor. We’re hoping that you’ll take this issue and enjoy it in January and all through 2010.

Thanks Louie.

TPW Magazine December Preview

Monday, November 30th, 2009

This is Passport to Texas

Before you enter holiday shopping abyss—grab the December issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine and peruse its annual gear guide for the perfect something for your outdoor enthusiast. Editor, Louie Bond.

And there’s something on it for everyone, from the people who are breaking open the piggy banks this year for Christmas, to the one of three people who made money in the stock market this year.

I thought back about my childhood, and was inspired by the old Neiman Marcus catalogs, with the wish list—you could buy everything from a mermaid suit to a dirigible. So, I asked out great gear writer—Russell Graves—to come up with, you know a couple of things on the high end; even when times are bad you still need to dream. So, let’s say our top item is going to remain a secret, but there are many, many zeros in the price tag.

But, of course, we have something for regular folks like me, including stocking stuffers, items for kids. Of course, every years there’s the latest in technology—and we have a few new gadgets, including a personal weather stations and your own personal GPS, and other items like that. There are lots of other products on there that I’m sure that our readers would love to find under the tree this Christmas, and I hope one of them makes its way under your tree, too.

Thanks Louie. The December issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine is on newsstands now.
