Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife

The August issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine is on newsstands later this month. And Associate Publisher, Charles Lohrmann, gives us a preview.

Well, by the time August rolls around, everyone is ready to get away – even for a couple of days. And with that in mind, we have an article by Melissa Gaskell about the best cabins in state parks.

And we have some really great cabins in our state parks. One example close to Austin is the 1930s log cabins built by the CCC in Bastrop State Park. And there are more CCC cabins at Lake Brownwood State Park, and then, in the Panhandle – Palo Duro – there are cabins overlooking the grand canyon of Texas.

And, of course, August is also a good time to indulge that childhood fantasy of building a boat. And, we have an article with photographs from Scott Summerlott, for a step–by-step process for building a skiff. So it [the August issue of the magazine] will take you out of the summer and into the fall.

Thank you, Charles.

[By the way, this is Charles Lohrmann’s final magazine preview for Passport to Texas. He accepted the position of editor at Texas Highways Magazine. We’ve really enjoyed working with Charles over the past several years, and will miss him greatly. Meantime, we wish him well in this new position.]

Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife

The July issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine is on newsstands now. And we get a preview with Associate Publisher, Charles Lohrmann.

July is our water issue. In recent years we’ve done bays, rivers, springs, and wetlands. This year’s water issue is about lakes. And in Texas that means man made reservoirs, except for Caddo Lake, which most people agree is the only natural lake in the state of Texas. And we’re lucky to have a funny and engaging article about Caddo and its history by Barbara Rodriguez.

And, one of the driving forces behind the water issue over the years has been Dr. Larry McKinney, and he is writing a story that explains the “big picture” status of lakes in Texas.

And, then one of the articles that I’m really looking forward to is E. Dan Klepper’s piece about Guerrero, which is the eighteenth century town on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande that was inundated by Falcon Reservoir.

So, we cover a little bit about lake culture and lake issues. And it’s another aspect about the water issue, which is essential to us here in Texas.

Thank you, Charles.

Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife

Whether you plan to hit the road or stay home this summer, now is the perfect time to make your plans. And to help you with a few ideas is Associate Publisher of Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine, Charles Lohrmann.

June is the perfect time to plan a fishing trip to the Texas coast, because you’re still a few weeks ahead of the extreme heat of July and August, and when you get down there to the coast, kayaking is the perfect way to get to the fish. Our saltwater fishing writer, Larry Bozka has written an article about kayak fishing and some things to keep in mind as you plan a fishing trip like that.

And, then, if you’re staying home, you’ll be seeing a lot of birds around the house no matter where you live in Texas, and we have another article on the top ten birding questions people ask. And it’s everything from ‘what do I do with a baby bird that I find,’ to ‘how do I identify birds at the bird feeder?’ And another article we have is a short piece on one of my favorite destinations, which is Devil’s river State Natural Area.

So, whether you’re staying home or traveling to the coast, or even going out to Southwest Texas to devil’s river, we have something that will make the summer a little more interesting.

Thank you, Charles.

There are going to be some really special stories to focus on. In May, which is the birding issue, we’re going to have a story about Hawk Man; a very interesting character that’s well worth learning about.

June is the coastal fishing issue, and there’s a wonderful story on kayak fishing, as well as one on river rats – people that really know how to fish Texas rivers. And then in July, we move to lakes. And that’s the state of lakes.

This issue will give our readers insights into the life cycle of lakes, as well as some fascinating stories. So, there are all kinds of things you’d never know if you didn’t read Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine.

No purchase is necessary, but everyone who subscribes to the magazine by July 31st is automatically entered. Find a link to the complete rules and information on how to enter the drawing when you log onto passporttotexas.org.

Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife

Texas boasts a bevy of birding hot spots. And in the May issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine…you’ll meet some of the fine feathered creatures that pass through our state. Associate publisher, Charles Lohrmann…

Well, May is our birding issue and it’s always popular. It’s a useful reference because we include a comprehensive calendar of birding events throughout the year.

We have amazing articles. This one, particularly interesting to me, is an article about migration by Noreen Damude. She describes migration patterns as a complex labyrinth of trails that overlap and interweave. And to illustrate, she describes the migrations of eight different birds.

Among them are long distance migrants like the Swainson’s Hawk; and one particularly interesting example is the Evening Grosbeak, which she describes as ‘irruptive, opportunistic wanderers,’ because their arrival is completely unpredictable.

Once you read this article, you’ll never think of migration as a simple north-south line again.

Thanks Charles.

You can find the May issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine on newsstands in mid-month. Or learn how you can subscribe when you visit passporttotexas.org.
